Cambridge University PhD student joins Optalysys

Optical computing company Optalysys Ltd welcomes Cambridge University PhD candidate, Alex Macfaden, to the team. Alex has joined as Mathematical Modeller and is focusing on applying Optalysys’s optical processing technology to solve complex mathematical equations.  In particular he is involved with Project EQUATE and Project ESCAPE.

Alex was sponsored by Optalysys during his PhD which specialises in complex optical Fourier Transforms.

Prior to his PhD, Alex graduated from the University of Oxford in 2011 with a Masters in Physics. He spent the following year studying for an MRes at University College London as part of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Photonic Systems Development. Alex has also previously worked in the nuclear sector, for Studsvik UK, and in research engineering roles in the oil and gas sector for The Engineering Business and BP.

Optalysys was founded in 2013.  CEO Dr Nick New, a renowned world expert in optical pattern recognition, developed the forerunner to the Optalysys technology whilst carrying out his PhD on optical pattern recognition at Cambridge University. Dr New went on to forge relationships with international academic and commercial institutions before securing funding to take Optalysys forward.

The Optalysys team includes specialists in software development, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), free-space optics, optical engineering and production engineering.
