Laying foundations for the future: How we’re building a Home for Exceptional Talent

Optalysys isn’t a typical organisation. We’re something new. A deep tech, hard sciences company on a mission to restore data privacy through future-looking technology. 

The challenges that we’re trying to solve are huge. But for us, those challenges are an opportunity to do something special, something that’s truly unique. We have an exciting journey ahead of us. And we know that if we’re going to achieve what we’ve set out to accomplish then we can’t do it alone. 

That’s why we’re building “A Home for Exceptional Talent,” a place where exceptional minds build exceptional tech to fuel an exceptional world. 

But beyond words on a page, what exactly does that actually mean? And what does it look like in practice?

The Optalysys mindset

As Optalysys’ Head of People, it’s my job to make sure that we put a structure in place that fully supports our employees so that they can tackle these challenges head-on. That starts with our culture. It’s the foundation upon which everything else is built and something that’s been integral to our business since day one. 

Our mindset is fast-paced and agile, we’re a vibrant workplace where brilliant minds feed off of one another and collaborate to solve complex issues at the cutting edge of our industry. 

No two days at Optalysys are the same. Step into our offices and you’re greeted with a hum of energy and excitement. On one side of the room you’ll find people gathered around a whiteboard, an impromptu meeting of minds that are bouncing off one another in an effort to solve a complex theoretical problem. On the other you’ll see people working in our state-of-the-art labs, busy taking that theory and trying to turn it into a reality. 

We’re building the unknown, finding new solutions to complex problems. And the only way to achieve that is through collaboration. We may be “A Home For Exceptional Talent,” but we’re also humble. There’s no ego here. Instead, it’s a place where everyone can contribute in pursuit of what’s right, rather than being right. 

We understand that if we’re going to harness the incredible potential of photonics, it will be achieved through the hard work and ingenuity of the exceptional minds who work here. It’s a challenge that we can only solve together. That’s why we’re working hard to tap into our people’s passion, creating a place where people feel part of something bigger than themselves driven by a shared purpose and a sense of fun that makes coming into work in the morning worthwhile (and above all, enjoyable).

Making work work for you

The people who work at Optalysys are more than just employees, they’re partners in our success. That’s why I’m focussed on giving them the tools they need to flourish.

We’re not bound by geography – that’s why we’re pulling together talent from across the world, building a diverse team that’s able to address global problems. A key part of my role is empowering those people to live their best lives away from the office so that they can achieve their full potential when they’re at work. We know that our people are so much more than what they do during the 9 to 5, that’s why we’ve done away with the idea of traditional office hours altogether. Instead, our core hours are from 10:30 to 3:30, with employees given licence to complete the rest of their work when it suits them. 

As a young mother myself, this gives me the opportunity to shape my working day around the school run, giving me the flexibility to fit work in around my life – not the other way around. Others use this as an opportunity to squeeze in daily workouts or take advantage of our remote working policy to travel the world. It’s just one example of the work / life balance that’s the foundation on which our “Home For Exceptional Talent” is being built.

Building a better future together

Working in an emergent market addressing challenges at the forefront of new technology, life at Optalysys is anything but ordinary. That’s why we’re on a mission to recruit extraordinary talent, gathering exceptional people from divergent disciplines to come together to achieve something truly special. 

These are exciting times for us. After a very successful Series A funding round we’re increasing headcount across every aspect of our operation. We’re only at the start of our journey, but we’re laying foundations for the future and building the framework that our “Home for Exceptional Talent” will be built on.
